What does GEMDAS mean?

GEMDAS is a mnemonic for the order of operations — the agreed sequence for evaluating a numerical expression so that everyone gets the same answer:

LetterStepWhat you do
GGrouping symbolsWork inside parentheses ( ), brackets [ ] and braces { } first, innermost first.
EExponentsEvaluate powers such as 52.
M / DMultiply and DivideLeft to right — multiplication does not go before division.
A / SAdd and SubtractLeft to right, as the final step.
24 ÷ 6 × 2 = 4 × 2 (divide first only because it comes first — M and D are equal priority, left to right) = 8
5 + 3 × 4 − 2 = 5 + 12 − 2 (multiply before adding) = 15 (add and subtract left to right)

FAQ

Is this GEMDAS worksheet generator really free?

Yes. You can generate and print as many worksheets as you need for your classroom or home. There is no signup, no email requirement and no paywall — every sheet and its answer key print straight from your browser.

What does GEMDAS stand for?

GEMDAS stands for Grouping symbols, Exponents, Multiply and Divide (working left to right), then Add and Subtract (working left to right). It is another name for the order of operations, just like PEMDAS.

Can I print an answer key?

Yes. Every generated worksheet has a Print Answer Key button next to it. The key prints as its own clean page showing each question with its final answer.

Can I get the same worksheet twice?

Yes. After you generate a sheet, the seed number shown below the buttons records that exact worksheet. Type the same seed into the Seed box with the same grade, difficulty and question count, and the identical sheet is generated again.

Which grades are the worksheets for?

Grades 3 through 8. Grades 3-4 practice whole numbers with grouping symbols, grades 5-6 add division and whole-number exponents, and grades 7-8 work with negative numbers and decimals.
